Back Next St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, Seldovia, Alaska

29 July 1993: For the first forty years or so of it's history, Alaska and Seldovia was owned by Russia.

It was not until 1867 that Alaska was purchased from the Russians after negotiations conducted by
Secretary of State William Seward ("Seward's folly"). It was another 82 years before Alaska became
49th state.

Seldovia is located on the Kenai Peninsula on Kachemak Bay.  It can only be reached by boat or plane.
