August 1972:  Construction of Winchester Cathedral began in the 11th century, but much of today's cathedral dates from the 14th century.
It is one of the largest cathedrals in England, with the longest nave and greatest overall length of any Gothic cathedral in Europe.

King Henry IV and Queen Mary were married here and author Jane Austen is buried here.
