August 1972:  In 871, at the age of 21, Alfred "the Great" was crowned King of Wessex and established Winchester as his capital.
The first church here, "Old Minster," was erected in 648 and served as the cathedral for Wessex until 1093 when it was replaced by this
Norman successor.
