Back Next | Anasazi Kivas, Aztec Ruins National Monument, Aztec, New Mexico |
25 July 1992: These ruins were initially mistakenly
identified as Aztec in origin, but the earliest inhabitants (c. 1100) are
believed to have been
Anasazi ("ancient ones" now referred to as "Ancestral Puebloans")
from Chaco Canyon, 55 miles to the south.
The
several kivas were used for religious, ceremonial and social activities.
