Back Next Old Caln Meeting House, Coatsville, Pennsylvania

20 May 2000:  This building was erected in 1726 and was extended in 1801.  "The meeting house’s stone walls were made entirely by hand; every stone in Old Caln was individually gathered from local fields and lifted into place. Because of the limited amount of stone that could be supported by wet mortar, it was standard procedure at the time to build the walls up 24 to 30 inches at a time. If you look closely at the walls, you can see these 'bands.' Relatively flat stones were laid on the inner and outer walls with mortar and rubble fill in the center. This building with its beautiful stone outer wall was meant to be seen."  From http://www.oldcalnmeetinghouse.org/history.htm
