On the morning of February 14th, the Union gunboats and the big guns of Fort Donelson exchanged "iron valentines" (from the Park Service guide) and the gunboats were forced to withdraw. However, Grant's army encircled the fort from the rear and due to "confusion and indecision among the Confederate commanders," a breakout attempt failed.
