The road follows the path of the Union forces in their attack on the 3rd Louisana Redan, one of the major Confederate fortifications. The Union engineers attempted to destroy the redan by planting 2,200 pounds of explosives underneath it. The explosion created a huge crater, but the subsequent attack failed.
