Theodore Roosevelt invested in the Maltese Cross Ranch in this area after an 1883 hunting trip. A year later, Roosevelt established the Elkhorn Ranch. This Maltese Cross Ranch cabin was originally about seven miles south of Medora. It was moved to its present site in the park in 1959.
