Winterthur was the home of Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1969) who first opened his gardens to the public in 1951. Henry was a great-grandson of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, founder of the Du Pont chemical company. Winterthur is located about six miles northwest of Wilmington, Delaware, on Delaware Route 52.
