The Stillwater Lift Bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Park Service, which controls the Lower St. Croix Scenic Riverway, wants the bridge removed "at the end of its useful life" (i.e., when a new planned bridge across the river is completed). I fondly remember visiting my grandmother over 55 years ago and racing down to the bluff above the downtown district to watch the bridge rise whenever we heard the signal horn of a passing boat. It would be a very sad situation if this historic bridge cannot be saved.
