The English translation of the top portion of this Latin plaque reads: "Here lies a most noble man, Lord Adam Bothwell, bishop of Orkney and Shetland; Commendator of the Monastry of Holy Cross, Senator of the College of Justice, and one of the lords of his Majesty's privy council; who died in the 67 year of his age, 23 day of the month of August, in the year of our Lord, 1593."
