James Ferguson (1871-1944) was
elected governor of Texas in 1914, but was impeached and
removed from office for misapplication of public funds
and several other offenses in July, 1917. In 1924 he
managed his wife's successful campaign for the
governorship. Miriam "Ma" Ferguson (1875-1961) was the first woman governor of Texas. She was first elected in 1924, was defeated in 1926 and then elected again for a second term in 1932. After retiring from the 1934 election, ran again in 1940, but was defeated by the incumbent governor. |
